Museu do Mar Exhibition

Coral Change

Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos, Cascais, Portugal

March 9th to June 8th 2025

Opening: March 8th, 3pm

The Coral Change exhibition proposes a fusion of art and science, inviting the public to immerse themselves in the complexity of the transformations that coral reefs undergo. Inspired by the cycles of destruction and rebirth of the reefs, the installations reflect on the consequences of climate change through a visual and material dialogue.

The research team contributed scientific images, data, and scientific narratives documenting the shape and color changes experienced by corals, which, under the impact of storms and heatwaves, oscillate between destruction and regeneration. These images become records of a living and vulnerable landscape, revealing the fragile beauty of these marine ecosystems.

Ceramic sculptures, with textured surfaces and colour palettes reminiscent of bleaching and regeneration processes, coexist with digital images that capture the dynamics of these changes. In this partnership, scientists also become part of the artistic process, creating videos and collaborating in the materialisation of sculptures and poetic narratives.

The artist, in turn, intertwines this scientific knowledge with a poetic dimension, creating imaginary organisms that serve as warnings and emerge as echoes of a possible future.

Coral Change invites contemplation of the continuous transitions of marine life, promoting reflection on the interdependence between living beings and their habitats.
